What is The Columbus Foodletter all about?

We’ve all heard the tired criticism: Columbus is a meat-and-potatoes town.

The truth is much more complicated. Sure we have loads of pizza, burgers, steaks, chicken fingers and Americanized tacos, but Columbus is actually a multicultural food scene that boasts several James Beard nominees and 70-plus international cuisines. Yep, we’ve counted.

We started The Columbus Foodletter in September 2024 because Central Ohio has so much more to offer than what’s easily identified on the surface—or in your Instagram feed.

Our aim is to help you sift through the noise by highlighting the often less-heralded people and local businesses that really make the Columbus food scene worth exploring—many of them small independent restaurants and immigrant-owned kitchens.

By subscribing to The Columbus Foodletter, you’ll receive our latest discoveries (like French tacos) plus recommendations for the best places to eat and shop around town, whether you’re looking for a comforting bowl of kimchi jjigae, a decent baguette, great soul food or an omakase-style dining experience

Through our “Dine Like an Expert" series, we’ll introduce you to local experts who help us demystify international cuisines ranging from Ethiopian to Ukrainian. You’ll also read interviews with restaurant owners, chefs, cooks, bartenders, bakers and entrepreneurs who contribute to our diverse and proudly Midwestern food landscape.

In our newsletter, we’ll cover some of the food trends we’re seeing around town, and sometimes we’ll opine about those trends. And for the home cook, we’ll offer pro-tips on where to find interesting or hard-to-find ingredients at local farmers markets and international groceries.

The Columbus Foodletter can only continue with paid support from our readers.

It takes money and legwork to explore the vast offering of cuisines in Columbus; to build relationships with business owners and tastemakers; and to write about new discoveries as well as old gems. We think that’s worth the price of a glass of wine or, say, one Club 185 cheeseburger and fries a month. (See, we like meat and potatoes, too.)

Join us in exploring the local food scene by subscribing to The Columbus Foodletter today.

Cheers!

Who’s behind The Columbus Foodletter?

The Columbus Foodletter is published twice a week by the founders of Columbus Food Adventures, Bethia Woolf and Andy Dehus, and Erin Edwards, the former dining editor at Columbus Monthly.

Bethia and Andy started out covering the local dining scene years ago through their blogs tacotruckscolumbus.com, alt.eats.columbus.com and hungrywoolf.com. They also contributed to Columbus Monthly’s dining coverage, which is how they met Erin.

Erin has an MSJ from Northwestern and was the city magazine’s dining editor for eight years, managing cover packages such as Columbus Monthly’s 10 Best Restaurants, Best New Restaurants, Tastemakers and others.
