I think it points to several things, none of which necessarily reflect poorly on the panel. One is the freshness variable, which was mentioned in the writeup. Another is the astonishing variability of the doneness of the bagels from the same baker - sometimes underbaked and overbaked bagels came out of the same bag!
All of which is to say that - at the time of tasting - Bruegger's at its (atypical?) best may have been more appealing than several better bagel maker's at their (atypical?) worst... and I wouldn't draw any broader conclusions than that from the exercise.
I don't live in Columbus, I just spent 75% of my time there last year because of a family emergency. The only bagels I tried were Block's Bagels and even though they are across town from where I was staying, I would drive over there to get them. They seemed pretty close to NYC bagels in my opinion. They are a million times better than any bagels I have had in Minnesota where I live. I won't even buy bagels in Minnesota, they are so disappointing. BTW - I've never had a bad bagel in New York or New Jersey (Montclair area). Even at bodegas, the bagels on the counter are better than anything you can get here.
Your comment is brash and without substance ~ NY bagels good, the panel knows nothing. What are the attributes that make bagels from NY/NJ better than anything in Columbus?
Lol, I would call your comment brash. I was expressing my opinion. You don't have to agree with me, but you also don't need to attack me, either. I am basing my opinion on the taste of bagels that I have eaten in NYC, NJ, Columbus, Minnesota, and Bruegger's. BTW - to me Bruegger's bagels are on par with grocery store bagels. You may have a different opinion.
And your opinion is ~folks who ranked Bruegger’s highly don’t know what good bagels taste like. You came in hot and got sassy when it was returned. Lol, Rebecca. Enjoy the bagels wherever you are.
I will put the Lox up against any bagel I’ve had anywhere. And I’ve had lots and lots of NYC bagels.
I will say, Apollo’s in NYC is really good as well.
The fact that you have Bruegger's in your top three means your panel doesn't know what a good bagel tastes like.
It does raise eyebrows, doesn't it?

We were surprised too - but blind tastings can be like that. What is your favorite Columbus bagel?
